“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world” (James 1:27).  

 

The major theme for this 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time explains the essence of the true religion, which is not a scrupulous, external observance of rules, laws, traditions and rituals, but it is a loving, obedient relationship with God, rendering humble, loving service to our neighbors, observing God’s Commandments, worshipping Him, and recognizing His presence in others. 

 

Our prayers, rituals, Sacraments and religious practices are only tools to help us develop and maintain our loving, obedient relationship with God. 

 

God gives us Law through Moses and Our Lord Jesus Christ. Laws that are honestly established, properly understood, carefully observed, and equitably upheld can function as a safeguard to protect all members of a community. Laws provide a necessary structure, which fosters the growth and development of a society. 

 

Hebrew people refer to God’s Law that gives them guidance and direction to their lives as “Torah,” which is regarded as a “revelation from God.” Torah prescribes a way of life living in accord with the daily calling of God. To study Torah is to know God. Faithfulness to Torah is the pathway to life and a means of closeness to God. 

 

Unfortunately, those who interpret and reinforce Torah sometimes stray away from the simple truths that are meant to reveal and protect God’s people, confusing the means with the end, leading people astray. Thus, Jesus comes to show us the way, how to fulfill the Law of God.   

 

God does not want us holding a relationship of Transaction but Transformation. Therefore, Dynamic Christian disciples are those who (1) BELIEVE, (2) GROW, (3) SERVE, (4) LOVE and (5) LEAD others to Jesus. Today’s topic invites us to practice the essence of the true religion, to foster a loving obedient relationship with God by serving our neighbors.
