“Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” (Matthew 2:1-2)
Today we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. Epiphany in Koine Greek epiphaneia, means "manifestation," "striking appearance." Thus, we celebrate the revelation of God the Son as a human being in Jesus Christ.
In Western Christianity, this feast commemorates the visit of the Magi to the Christ child, thus Jesus' physical manifestation to the Gentiles. Eastern Christians commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God.
In some countries, this feast is associated with the practice of gift-giving, following the tradition of the magi who bring gold, frankincense and myrrh to Baby Jesus, presenting an occasion for us to surrender everything to God.
We are called to make a daily effort to manifest Christ’s triumph over sin and death through our words and works, a triumph, which is to be shared by all. We are also enlightened and charged with the task of dispelling the darkness of sins that threatens to confuse the truth or to cover justice with a cloud of lie, helping others to welcome and embrace the Epiphany of the Lord.
God does not want us holding a relationship of Transaction but Transformation. Therefore, Dynamic Christian disciples are those who (1) BELIEVE, (2) GROW, (3) SERVE, (4) LOVE and (5) LEAD others to Jesus. Today’s topic invites us to LEAD others to Christ like the magi did to fulfill God’s will and obtain our salvation.
How can we offer the best gifts of ourselves to Christ Jesus?
