Se nos invita a reflexionar, no solo sobre el santo trío que ha figurado de manera tan importante en nuestra historia de salvación, sino también sobre todas las familias de la humanidad. Desafortunadamente, los lazos familiares se han resentido durante las últimas décadas. La evidencia de debilidad relacional y decadencia está afectando a todos. “When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,” and to offer the sacrifice of “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,” in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.” (Luke 2:22-24) Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Holy Family and offer all members of our own families on the altar for God’s blessings. We are invited to reflect, not only upon the holy threesome who have figured so importantly in our salvation history, but also upon all families of humankind. Unfortunately, the family ties have suffered over the past several decades. The evidence of relational weakness and decay is affecting everyone. Therefore, we should effect positive conversion and growth within family like love, compassion, mercy, forgiveness, generosity, humility, honesty, trust, faith, sacrifice, respect, responsibility … to sustain and strengthen our family bonds, reverting the sinful result. The love shared among the Holy Family offers us a witness and a challenge, requires us to look beyond faults and idiosyncrasies to discover Christ who lives in us, replace nitpicking, nagging and criticism with wise counsel, humbly offer encouragement and praise. “In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” (Luke 1:26-28) Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent. The major theme of today’s readings focuses on the annunciation of archangel Gabriel to Virgin Mary and the circumstances leading up to the first coming of Jesus Christ, the event which sets the pattern for His coming to us now and at the end of time. The angel's salutation to Mary, “Hail, full of grace,” reminds us of God's words to Moses at the burning bush, "I will be with you" (Exodus 3:12), the angel’s salutation Gideon, "The Lord is with you, you mighty warrior" (Judges 6:12) and the Lord's assurance to Jeremiah, "Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee" (Jeremiah 1:8). "Hermanos: Vivan siempre alegres". (1 Tesalonicenses 5:16) El tema principal de este Tercer Domingo de Adviento (el "Domingo de Gaudete o Regocijo") es el gozo que experimentamos por la llegada de la salvación de Dios a la humanidad. Subraya el Adviento como una celebración de lo ya experimentado y aún por experimentar de la venida de Dios a la humanidad. La única respuesta adecuada a esta profunda realidad es la "alegría", que con demasiada frecuencia se equipara erróneamente con ser "feliz". La felicidad proviene de “sucesos” que emocionan, deleitan, agradan y divierten. Es de fuera y depende de factores externos. Sin embargo, la "alegría" viene de adentro. Penetra, impregna y persiste, a pesar de las circunstancias. La “alegría” es un regalo que Dios despierta en nuestro corazón. El gozo surge cuando consideramos la gracia, la misericordia, el perdón y la asistencia de Dios en nuestra salvación, específicamente en el amor de Dios encarnado en las palabras y obras de Jesucristo. El mismo Juan el Bautista salta desde adentro cuando su madre y la Virgen María se encuentran. “Rejoice always.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16) “Rejoice always.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16) The major theme for this Third Sunday of Advent (the “Gaudete or Rejoice Sunday”) is on the Joy that we experience for the arrival of God’s salvation to humanity. It underscores Advent as a celebration of the already experienced and yet-to-be experienced again of God’s coming among humankind. The only adequate response to this profound reality is “joy,” which is too often wrongfully equated with being “happy.” Happiness comes from “happenings” which excite, delight, please and amuse. It is from outside and depends on outside factors. “Joy” however is from inside. It penetrates, permeates and persists, despite the circumstances. “Joy” is a gift that God awakens in our heart. Joy erupts when we consider God’s grace, mercy, forgiveness and assistance in our salvation, specifically in God’s love incarnates in the words and works of Jesus Christ. John the Baptist himself leaps from within as his mother and the Virgin Mary meet. The Virgin Mary is portrayed in exultant joy because the age of salvation has come to pass within her. Jesus’ birth announcement causes shepherds, magi and angels to rejoice. Jesus assures His contemporaries that repentant sinners, not the righteous, bring joy to heaven, and assures those persecuted for the sake of the reign of God that they will one-day share in a joy that can never be taken from them. Joy as a way of life is one of the “challenges” that Jesus demands of His disciples. He insists that we have joy in knowing that our prayers will be heard as one of His promises. God does not want us holding a relationship of Transaction but Transformation. “Una voz clama: “Preparen el camino del Señor en el desierto, construyan en el páramo una calzada para nuestro Dios. Que todo valle se eleve, que todo monte y colina se rebajen; que lo torcido se enderece y lo escabroso se allane. Entonces se revelará la gloria del Señor y todos los hombres la verán”. Así ha hablado la boca del Señor”. (Isaías 40: 3-5) El tema principal de este segundo domingo de Adviento es nuestra experiencia de regreso a casa para restablecer nuestra relación con Dios y los demás, desafiando a aquellos que están enojados, heridos con rencores persistentes a regresar a casa para celebrar el abrazo amoroso de Dios y la paz verdadera. “A voice proclaims: In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” (Isaiah 40:3-5) The major theme for this Second Sunday of Advent is on our coming home experience to re-establish our relationship with God and others, challenging those who are angry, hurt with persistent grudges to come home to celebrate God’s loving embrace and true peace. As Advent season yields to Christmas, many people take this opportunity to return home to visit family and friends to renew the bond of love, which makes us human and sustains us in the daily challenges of our lives. Some homecomings are particularly poignant and even difficult, especially when there has been a recent divorce or death in the family, especially in this pandemic. Coming home to celebrate without loved ones seems to renew the sense of loss and dredges up sorrows.
